8/13/2016 · The best book for learning point set topology in my opinion is the book by James Munkres entitled, "Topology". There is also a book called, "Basic Topology" by M.A. Armstrong. However, Armstrong's book is very compact and one would have to check the various facts he mentions in between, which are not trivial for a beginner.

There's a great book called Lecture Notes in Algebraic Topology by Davis and Kirk which I highly recommend for advanced beginners, especially those who like the categorical viewpoint and homological algebra. I think the treatment in Spanier is a bit outdated.

I think the best intro to topology that gives the best idea of what the subject is all about is Armstrong's Basic Topology. I think it's a mistake, as in Munkres' book, to spend too much time on point-set topology when first learning topology; there'll be time for that later.

6/13/2012 · If you don't, Kosniowski has a nice treatment of point-set topology in first 1/4 of his book that is just enough to learn algebraic topology in either Kosniowski or Massey. I would avoid Munkres for algebraic topology, though. I found his chapters on algebraic topology (ESPECIALLY the covering space chapter) to be quite dry and unmotivated.
